How to Memorize Surah Ar-Rahman Using Its Repeating Verse

How to Memorize Surah Ar-Rahman Using Its Repeating Verse
Memorize Surah Ar-Rahman faster by using its 31 repeating verses as anchors. A section-by-section plan, tajweed tips and a free finish-date planner.

The fastest way to memorize Surah Ar-Rahman is to let its famous refrain do half the work. The verse “Fa-bi-ayyi ala’i rabbikuma tukadhdhiban” (“So which of the favors of your Lord would you both deny?”) appears 31 times in the surah’s 78 ayat. Once you know it, you are really memorizing the short verses between each repetition, usually just one at a time. Students who memorize the Quran with a teacher often finish this surah in a few weeks with a steady daily routine.

Below you will find the exact pattern of the refrain, a plan that splits the surah into five natural sections, the mistakes that trip most people up, and a planner to set your own finish date.

Key takeaways

  • Ar-Rahman has 78 ayat and covers just over three pages of the standard Madani mushaf (pages 531 to 534).
  • The refrain first appears at ayah 13 and then almost every other ayah until ayah 77.
  • The real challenge is not the refrain but the order of the verses between repetitions.
  • Learn the surah in five themed sections and link each one to the theme that comes next.

Understand the Pattern Before You Memorize

The refrain is your anchor, but only if you know exactly where it falls. Ayat 1 to 12 come before it with no repetition at all. After that, the refrain appears at these ayat:

13, 16, 18, 21, 23, 25, 28, 30, 32, 34, 36, 38, 40, 42, 45, 47, 49, 51, 53, 55, 57, 59, 61, 63, 65, 67, 69, 71, 73, 75, 77

Notice that in most places only one ayah sits between two refrains. There are only four places where two ayat come in between:

Refrain atNext refrain atThe two ayat in between
131614 and 15: the creation of man from clay and of the jinn from smokeless fire
182119 and 20: the two seas that meet, with a barrier between them
252826 and 27: everyone on earth perishes, and the Face of your Lord remains
424543 and 44: this is Hell which the criminals denied, and they go round between it and boiling water

Memorize this table and you remove the most common source of confusion: skipping or doubling an ayah because you lost count of the refrains. The final ayah, 78, comes after the last refrain and closes the surah by blessing the name of your Lord.

The refrain uses the dual form (“you both”), addressing mankind and the jinn, who are called ‘the two heavy ones’ (ath-thaqalan) in ayah 31 and named directly in ayah 33. Keeping that meaning in mind helps you feel the question rather than repeat it mechanically. You can read a reliable translation alongside the Arabic on Quran.com.

Split the Surah Into Five Themed Sections

Ar-Rahman moves through clear themes. Memorize one section at a time, and learn the opening idea of each section as a “door” into it.

  1. Ayat 1 to 12: Allah’s gifts in creation. Ar-Rahman taught the Quran, created man, taught him clear speech; the sun and moon, the stars and trees, the sky and the balance (mizan), the earth with its fruit, palms, grain and fragrant plants.
  2. Ayat 13 to 32: Creation and signs. Man and jinn, the two easts and two wests, the two seas, pearls and coral, ships like mountains, all that perishes, everyone asking of Him, and “We will attend to you.”
  3. Ayat 33 to 45: The Day of Judgment. The challenge to pass beyond the heavens and earth, flames and smoke, the sky splitting, criminals known by their marks, and Hell.
  4. Ayat 46 to 61: The first two gardens. For whoever fears standing before his Lord: two gardens with branches, two springs, pairs of every fruit, couches lined with brocade, and the reward of excellence.
  5. Ayat 62 to 78: Two more gardens. Below those, two dark green gardens, gushing springs, fruit, palms and pomegranates, pavilions and green cushions, then the closing praise.

Sections 4 and 5 are where most students mix things up, because they describe similar blessings with small differences. For example, ayah 50 mentions two flowing springs, while ayah 66 describes two springs gushing forth. Ayah 52 mentions pairs of every fruit, while ayah 68 names fruit, palm trees and pomegranates. Write these pairs side by side in a notebook and recite them as contrasts.

Set Your Daily Target

Because the surah is just over three pages, even a modest target gets you there quickly. Choose “Custom number of pages” in the planner below, enter 4 to include a small margin, and try different daily amounts.

Set your daily lines to see when you will finish the surah

As a rough guide, at 5 lines a day and 5 days a week you can complete Ar-Rahman in about two and a half weeks of study days, plus revision days. If you are new to memorizing, our guide on Quran memorization techniques explains methods for making each line stick.

A Daily Method That Uses the Refrain

Here is a simple routine that works well for this surah:

  1. Listen first. Play today’s portion from a trusted reciter several times while following in the mushaf.
  2. Read it correctly from the page at least five times, checking every vowel.
  3. Memorize the “between” ayah only. You already know the refrain, so focus all your attention on the one verse before it.
  4. Chain it: recite the previous refrain, the new ayah, then the refrain again.
  5. Connect to yesterday. Recite from the start of the current section up to today’s ayah without looking.
  6. Count on your fingers. Fold one finger each time you say the refrain. In section 2, for example, you should reach nine refrains by ayah 32.

Tajweed Points to Get Right

Small errors repeated 31 times become deeply fixed, so take extra care with the refrain from day one:

  • آلاءِ (ala’i): the first alif is a madd badal (2 counts), and the second is a madd muttasil, held 4 or 5 counts in Hafs.
  • تُكَذِّبَانِ (tukadhdhiban): give the shaddah on the dhal its full weight, and make sure the dhal is pronounced with the tongue tip between the teeth, not as a “z” or “d”.
  • Stopping on tukadhdhiban: the madd before the final nun becomes madd ‘arid lis-sukun, which may be held 2, 4 or 6 counts. Pick one length and stay consistent throughout the surah.
  • Ayah 1, الرَّحْمَٰن: the lam is silent (a sun letter), so the ra is read with shaddah.

If the madd lengths are new to you, our article on the types of madd in tajweed explains each one with examples.

About the title “bride of the Quran.” You may hear Ar-Rahman called ‘arus al-Quran. The title comes from a narration that hadith scholars consider weak, so it is best not to attribute it firmly to the Prophet (peace be upon him). The surah’s beauty speaks for itself.

Revision: Keeping Ar-Rahman Strong

Repetition helps you memorize this surah quickly, but it also makes it easy to slip from one section to another later. Once you finish:

  • Recite the full surah daily for the first two weeks, then every few days.
  • Recite it in your night prayers, where you cannot glance at the mushaf.
  • Ask someone to give you a random ayah number and continue from there. This tests whether you truly know the order.

If you have memorized other surahs with a similar method, you will see the same benefits. Our step-by-step plans for memorizing Surah Yaseen in 30 days and memorizing Surah Al-Mulk pair well with Ar-Rahman as your next goal. In a one-to-one Hifz course, your teacher checks each section before you move on, which is the best protection against mixing up the gardens in sections 4 and 5.

Frequently Asked Questions

How many times is “Fa-bi-ayyi ala’i rabbikuma tukadhdhiban” repeated?

It appears 31 times, from ayah 13 to ayah 77. Its frequent repetition is one reason Ar-Rahman is considered one of the easier longer surahs to memorize.

How long does it take to memorize Surah Ar-Rahman?

It depends on your daily target and experience. At 5 lines a day you can finish in roughly three weeks including revision days; at half a page a day, about two weeks. Beginners should allow extra time for correct reading first.

Is Surah Ar-Rahman Makki or Madani?

The standard Madinah mushaf labels it Madani, while many scholars of tafsir held that it was revealed in Makkah. Both views are well known; it does not change how you memorize or recite it.

What is the hardest part of memorizing Ar-Rahman?

Most students find the descriptions of the four gardens (ayat 46 to 77) the trickiest, because similar blessings are repeated with small changes. Compare the matching ayat side by side and recite them to a teacher who can catch swaps.

Can my child memorize Surah Ar-Rahman?

Yes. Children often enjoy the rhythm of the refrain and memorize it quickly. Break the surah into small portions of one or two ayat a day, and have a teacher in our Quran memorization program check pronunciation regularly.
