To memorize Surah Al-Mulk, split its 30 ayahs into seven short sections by meaning, memorize two or three ayahs a day, and recite the whole surah every night before sleep once each section is in place. At that pace, most adults memorize it firmly in two to three weeks, and a confident reader can do it in ten days. The surah is only about two and a half pages in the standard Madani mushaf, so it is one of the most rewarding first goals after Juz Amma. If you want a teacher to check every word as you go, our structured Hifz program builds plans like this one around your level.
Below is the full step-by-step method: the sections, a daily schedule, the similar verses that trip people up, and how to keep Al-Mulk strong for life.
Key takeaways
- Al-Mulk has 30 ayahs and opens Juz 29; it fits in about 2.5 pages of the Madani mushaf.
- Memorize it in seven meaning-based sections, not by counting lines.
- Watch the near-identical openings: “a-amintum” vs “am amintum” (16, 17), “amman hadhal-ladhi” (20, 21) and “qul huwal-ladhi” (23, 24).
- Reciting it every night, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) did, is also the best revision plan.

ToggleWhy Muslims Love to Memorize Al-Mulk
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said that a surah of thirty verses interceded for a man until he was forgiven, and that it is Tabarak alladhi biyadihil-mulk. This hadith is reported by Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi, who graded it hasan. Al-Tirmidhi also reports that the Prophet (peace be upon him) would not sleep until he had recited Surah As-Sajdah and Surah Al-Mulk.
That nightly practice is a gift for anyone memorizing it: once you know the surah, your bedtime recitation becomes daily revision built into an act of worship. You can read the surah with translation on Quran.com before you begin.
Before You Start: Three Preparation Steps
- Read it correctly first. Recite the surah to a teacher or follow a trusted reciter line by line until you can read every word without error. Memorizing a mistake is far harder than learning correctly once.
- Understand the outline. Read a translation of the whole surah once or twice. Knowing what comes next is the strongest memory aid you have.
- Choose one mushaf and stick to it. Your visual memory of where each ayah sits on the page will carry you through the surah.
The Seven Sections of Surah Al-Mulk
Memorizing by meaning means each chunk tells one small “scene.” Learn the theme of each section and you will rarely lose your place.
| Section | Ayahs | Theme to remember |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 to 5 | Allah’s dominion; life and death as a test; seven flawless heavens; the stars as lamps |
| 2 | 6 to 11 | The disbelievers in Hell, the keepers’ question, and their confession of regret |
| 3 | 12 to 14 | Those who fear their Lord unseen; He knows what is in the hearts |
| 4 | 15 to 19 | The earth made easy to walk on; feeling secure from His punishment; the birds held aloft |
| 5 | 20 to 24 | Who could help or provide besides the Most Merciful; hearing, sight and hearts as blessings |
| 6 | 25 to 27 | “When is this promise?”; the faces of the deniers when they see it near |
| 7 | 28 to 30 | Final questions to the deniers, ending with the water that sinks into the earth |
A 15-Day Plan to Memorize Al-Mulk
This plan suits most adults with 20 to 30 minutes a day. Each day has three parts: new ayahs, linking, and revision.
- Days 1 to 2: ayahs 1 to 5 (section 1). Recite them 10 times looking, then 10 times from memory.
- Days 3 to 5: ayahs 6 to 11. Each day, recite section 1 before starting new work.
- Day 6: ayahs 12 to 14, then recite 1 to 14 in one go.
- Days 7 to 8: ayahs 15 to 19.
- Days 9 to 10: ayahs 20 to 24. Pay special attention to the similar openings (see below).
- Day 11: ayahs 25 to 27, then recite 15 to 27 together.
- Day 12: ayahs 28 to 30.
- Days 13 to 15: no new ayahs. Recite the whole surah three times a day, once to a teacher or family member if possible.

The Similar Verses That Trip People Up
Al-Mulk has several ayahs that begin the same way. These are where most students mix things up, so give them extra attention.
Ayahs 3 and 4: “irji’il-basar”
Ayah 3 ends with farji’il-basara hal tara min futur (look again: do you see any flaw?). Ayah 4 begins thummar-ji’il-basara karratayn (then look again, twice). Remember the order: “fa” first, then “thumma,” then “twice.”
Ayahs 16 and 17: “a-amintum” and “am amintum”
These two are almost identical, which is exactly why they cause mistakes. Ayah 16 begins ءَأَمِنتُم (a-amintum), and the warning is that the earth could swallow you (an yakhsifa bikumul-ard). Ayah 17 begins أَمْ أَمِنتُم (am amintum), and the warning is a violent storm of stones (hasiba). Link them as ground first, then sky, and remember that the second one adds am.
Ayahs 20 and 21: “amman hadhal-ladhi”
Ayah 20 asks who is the army (jund) that could help you besides the Most Merciful. Ayah 21 asks who could provide for you (yarzuqukum) if He withheld His provision. Think: protection, then provision.
Ayahs 23 and 24: “qul huwal-ladhi”
Ayah 23 says He brought you into being (ansha’akum) and gave you hearing, sight and hearts. Ayah 24 says He dispersed you throughout the earth (dhara’akum) and to Him you will be gathered. Creation comes before spreading out, just as in life.
Ayahs 28 and 30: “qul ara’aytum”
Two of the last three ayahs begin with qul ara’aytum. Ayah 28 is about Allah destroying or showing mercy to the Prophet and those with him. Ayah 30, the last ayah, is about your water sinking away. End the surah with water, and you will not swap them.
Write the openings down. On a small card, list the first two words of every ayah in order. Reading this card once a day for a week fixes the sequence faster than anything else, especially for the similar openings above.
Tajweed Points to Watch in Al-Mulk
Memorize the sounds correctly from the start. A few places deserve care:
- Ayah 16, ءَأَمِنتُم مَّن: the noon sakinah before ta is read with ikhfa, and the meem sakinah meeting meem is read with idgham mithlayn and a full ghunnah.
- Stopping on قَدِيرٌ, خَبِيرُ, بَصِيرٌ and ٱلْمَصِيرُ: these ayah endings (1, 14, 19 and 6) stop on a ra preceded by a ya sakinah, so the ra is read light (tarqeeq). Many students wrongly make it heavy.
- Madd muttasil appears often, as in ٱلسَّمَآءِ and سِيٓـَٔتْ (ayah 27). Hold it for 4 or 5 counts, consistently, as your teacher reads it.
- Stopping at ayah ends: stop with a sukun on the last letter and apply any required madd ‘arid lissukun evenly across the surah.
If these terms are new to you, a teacher in our online Hifz classes will point them out as you recite. Hearing your recitation is the only way to catch them reliably.
Keeping Al-Mulk Strong After You Memorize It
Memorization fades without revision. Fortunately, Al-Mulk has a built-in plan:
- Recite it every night before sleep, following the Sunnah.
- Pray with it. Split it across the rak’at of your night prayer or witr.
- Recite it to someone once a week for the first two months, so small mistakes do not settle in.
For more retention strategies, read how to memorize the Quran without forgetting. When Al-Mulk is solid, many students go on to memorize Surah Yaseen, or complete Juz Amma with a 60-day plan if they have not yet.
Frequently Asked Questions
How long does it take to memorize Surah Al-Mulk?
Most adults memorize it in two to three weeks at two or three ayahs a day. Fluent readers who can give 45 minutes a day often finish in about ten days. Children usually need three to five weeks with daily repetition.
How many ayahs and pages is Surah Al-Mulk?
Surah Al-Mulk has 30 ayahs. In the standard 15-line Madani mushaf it takes up about two and a half pages and is the first surah of Juz 29.
Is there a hadith about reciting Al-Mulk every night?
Al-Tirmidhi reports that the Prophet (peace be upon him) would not sleep until he recited Surah As-Sajdah and Surah Al-Mulk. Abu Dawud and al-Tirmidhi also report that this surah of thirty verses interceded for a man until he was forgiven.
Can a child memorize Surah Al-Mulk?
Yes, many children memorize it after Juz Amma. Use smaller daily portions of one or two ayahs, lots of listening, and recite it together at bedtime. Explaining the scenes in simple words, like the birds in the sky, helps children remember the order.
What is the best way to check my memorization?
Recite to someone who can follow along in the mushaf, ideally a qualified teacher who can also correct your tajweed. In our online Quran memorization course, students recite their new ayahs live and get corrections on the spot.
