Benefits of Fasting in The Month of Ramadan

1. Fulfilling a Pillar of Islam

Fasting during Ramadan is one of the Five Pillars of Islam, making it a fundamental obligation for Muslims. Observing this fast is an act of obedience to Allah’s command.

Allah says in the Quran:

“O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous.”

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:183)

2. Attaining Taqwa (God-Consciousness)

Fasting helps develop Taqwa (piety and mindfulness of Allah) by encouraging self-restraint and spiritual discipline. It fosters a stronger awareness of Allah’s presence.

Allah says:

“O mankind, worship your Lord, who created you and those before you, that you may become righteous.”

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:183)

3. Forgiveness of Sins

Fasting in Ramadan serves as a means for spiritual purification and forgiveness of past sins when observed with sincerity and faith.

The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said:

“Whoever fasts during Ramadan out of faith and seeking reward, his past sins will be forgiven.”

(Sahih Bukhari)

4. Multiplication of Good Deeds and Rewards

Acts of worship performed in Ramadan, such as fasting, prayer, and charity, are highly rewarded.

Allah says:

“Indeed, Allah does not allow the reward of those who do good to be lost.”

Surah Hud (9:120)

5. Spiritual Purification and Self-Control

Fasting purifies the soul by teaching self-restraint and helps Muslims control their desires and actions.

The Prophet (PBUH) said:

“Fasting is a shield. So, the fasting person should avoid foul speech and ignorant behavior.”

(Sahih Bukhari)

6. Empathy for the Less Fortunate

Fasting helps Muslims experience hunger and thirst, cultivating empathy for those who suffer from poverty and hardship.

Allah says:

“And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive.”

Surah Al-Insan (76:8)

7. Strengthening the Relationship with Allah

Fasting allows Muslims to draw closer to Allah through prayer, Quran recitation, and supplication (du’a).

Allah says:

“Indeed, I am near. I respond to the call of the supplicant when he calls upon Me.”

Surah Al-Baqarah (2:186)

8. The Night of Power (Laylat al-Qadr)

Ramadan includes Laylat al-Qadr (The Night of Decree), which is better than a thousand months, making worship during this night highly rewarding.

Allah says:

“The Night of Decree is better than a thousand months.”

Surah Al-Qadr (97:3)

9. Promoting Unity Among Muslims

Ramadan fosters a sense of global unity as Muslims fast collectively, share iftar meals, and pray together, emphasizing brotherhood and compassion.

The Prophet (PBUH) said:

“The believers in their mutual kindness, compassion, and sympathy are just like one body.”

(Sahih Bukhari)

10. A Special Reward from Allah

Fasting is a unique act of worship with a special reward from Allah.

The Prophet (PBUH) said:

“Allah said: Every deed of the son of Adam is for him except fasting; it is for Me, and I will reward it.”
